CTERA Enterprise File Services Platform Features

  • Infinite File Capacity

CTERA’s distributed caching technology enables secure and unlimited file access from any endpoint or branch storage gateway. Users have access to all cloud-based files from the desktop, through native OS tools like Windows Explorer or Mac Finder.

  • Policy-Based File Tiering

CTERA’s Platform supports user-defined and IT-defined policies to optimize file storage so data is where it most needs to be for productivity and cost-savings purposes:

    • The most accessed files are stored locally to the endpoints
    • Locally shared files and projects and less-accessed files are stored in the office using CTERA Cloud Storage Gateways
    • Dormant files can be moved entirely to the cloud – still available via web browser – in order to preserve endpoint and remote office gateway storage capacity
  • Universal ACLs / NT-ACL Enforcement

CTERA delivers NT-ACL (Access Control Lists) enforcement across on-premises appliances and the cloud, a unique functionality that enables organizations to easily migrate legacy file server data from remote office file shares to desktop or laptop experiences while preserving original file structure and user access permissions.

This feature also enables CTERA customers to seamlessly redirect users to the same files and folders in the cloud as part of CTERA Zero-Minute Disaster Recovery.

  • Office 365 Integration

Users can create, edit, and collaborate on Office 365 files  stored behind the firewall on the CTERA platform, ensuring IT does not relinquish security or privacy of corporate information. End-users can create new Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files from within the CTERA web browser interface, simultaneously edit documents with other users, and track changes in real-time.

  • Source-Based Global Deduplication & Compression

CTERA agents, mobile apps and Cloud Storage Gateways all feature the ability to globally deduplicate data within a secure tenant environment.  Before being sent to the cloud, transfers are optimized with block-level deduplication and compression to reduce network traffic, enhance user performance and minimize the cost and consumption of cloud storage.

  • Enterprise Authentication

Users and groups can be authenticated via Active Directory, LDAP and SAML. CTERA’s Platform supports many of the most sophisticated domain services, including support for Active Directory tree and forest topologies, cross-domain trusts, Single Sign On and custom UID and GID mappings.  The CTERA Platform integrates with leading enterprise identity management tools to provide enterprises the flexibility to use the tools they know and trust.

  • Data Loss Prevention (DLP) / External File Sharing Policy

External file sharing and collaboration functionality reduces leakage of sensitive data by enabling IT administrators to:

    • Disallow external file sharing with specific domains according to an IT-defined security policy based on user profiles or groups
    • Offer a preview-only method of file sharing, where users cannot download, print, or copy certain files shared with them
    • Mitigate the risks of document screen capture by displaying the recipient’s name as a watermark on the document preview

  • Data Governance APIs & Integrations

The CTERA platform interfaces with the ICAP protocol to enable leading data governance tools to achieve comprehensive insights into the files stored and shared in the enterprise. CTERA data governance integrations provide organizations the ability to use their trusted tools for data loss prevention and eDiscovery of file and backup data.

  • File Security APIs

CTERA provides organizations to achieve superior levels of data security by integrating with leading tools to prevent the outbreak of viruses and malware, as well as integrations with enterprise mobility management to enable secure, productive BYOD strategies.

  • Self-Service PC Replacement/Migration

Users can seamlessly migrate between different devices and operating systems (PC to Mac and vice-versa) without IT administrator intervention. This functionality also ensures that contacts, calendars, email accounts, and more are placed in appropriate locations on new machines.

  • Zero-Minute Disaster Recovery

IT admins can redirect users to secure direct-to-cloud file access in the event of a gateway outage, ensuring uninterrupted office productivity. Seamless ACL (user permissions) enforcement on both the local gateway and in the cloud ensure users have same file access in cloud failover scenarios, while enterprise IT saves $1,000s per office by eliminating the need for expensive, redundant office storage appliances.

  • Audit Trails

Administrators and security officers can easily monitor system access, file sharing and file storage to ensure organizational security and regulatory compliance.

  • Information Lifecycle Management

CTERA leverages information lifecycle management (ILM) tools from Amazon S3 and NetApp StorageGRID to intelligently place files in cloud storage tiers according to their application profile. Long-term archive and backup data can be directed to low cost storage tiers, while interactive data (EFSS content) can be stored on storage tiers that offer cost-optimized ingress and egress, reducing customers’ overall cloud infrastructure investments.

  • Load Balancing

CTERA’s scale-out architecture can balance file traffic across multiple web servers to ensure no single point of contention in a service delivery architecture.

  • Policy-Based Data Federation

CTERA’s Platform is a composable architecture that enables organizations to contain file and backup I/O to a specific region or network according to user, group or tenant.  This flexibility enables global organizations can ensure data sovereignty, store data local to users and that data never traverses clouds or expensive networks when it’s unnecessary.

  • Service Automation Plans and Templates

Cloud architects can fully automate the provisioning of new user and data protection services by establishing pre-defined cloud storage service plans that can get applied to new service subscribers and enable subscribers to easily be updated as plan changes are published.  Service Plan Templates enable administrators to automatically discover users and systems and assign them to service plans based upon pre-defined policies.
