Telefónica’s Partnership: Transforming Secure Data Management
  • Launched ‘Disco Virtual en Red’: Spain-based cloud storage services for business customers
  • Includes hybrid local/cloud backup and secure file sync & share
  • Scales to support hundreds of thousands of customers
  • Private-branded Telefonica solution
  • Hosted out of Telefonica’s datacenters in Spain

Company Background

Telefonica is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world. The company has a significant presence in 25 countries with a strong presence in Spain, Europe and Latin America. Telefonica serves more than 2.5 million business customers in Spain.

The Challenge

Telefonica identified a need in the market for Spain-based, secure cloud storage services. Its business customers demanded better ways of storing, sharing and protecting data. Telefonica wanted to offer customers a variety of solutions to support their business processes, including hybrid local/cloud backup, secure file sync & share, and mobile collaboration, all from a single platform with cloud storage infrastructure running out of Telefonica’s Spain-based datacenters.

The solution had to scale to serve hundreds of thousands of customers, while seamlessly integrating with existing billing and provisioning systems, including Telefonica’s own Aplicateca business app store.

In addition, Telefonica required a multi-tenant solution allowing customers to have their own private tenancies, with complete separation of data, security and access privileges.

We chose CTERA as our partner in creating this innovative service because they provide a unified platform for enabling cloud storage services, supporting the scalability we need and the security that our customers expect.

The CTERA Solution

Telefonica chose CTERA’s cloud storage platform to deliver hybrid local/cloud backup and file sync & share services. The solution comprises a cloud-side service delivery platform, on-premises cloud storage gateways, and agents for servers, laptops and mobile — all with a unified management interface.

Telefonica is hosting the cloud infrastructure in its own datacenters, and is able to monitor and troubleshoot devices and software agents remotely, as well as perform remote firmware and software upgrades. The CTERA-powered solution is rebranded to reflect Telefonica’s corporate identity, including all aspects of customer interaction on the web, PC and mobile devices. Users can access and manage their shared files, backup and accounts on the Web, using a standard browser and mobile apps.

Telefonica customers can choose to use a local CTERA appliance for hybrid/local cloud backup at both file and disk image level (bare metal), also benefiting from a full set of NAS features, supporting CIFS, NFS, AFP, FTP and rsync protocols, with RAID for local redundancy and customer-defined replication to the cloud. It utilizes CTERA’s advanced Active Directory GPO (Group Policy Object) and Single Sign-On integration for user authentication and access control.

“We identified a need in the market for Spain-based, secure cloud storage services”, said Andres Lopez Hedoire, Marketing Manager, Cloud Security and Management, Telefonica. “We chose CTERA as our partner in creating this innovative service because they provide a unified platform for enabling cloud storage services, supporting the scalability we need and the security that our customers expect. Thanks to CTERA’s multi-tenant architecture, enterprise customers have their own ‘private hosted’ environments with complete separation of data security and access privileges.”

With the CTERA solution, Telefonica was able to rapidly launch high-value services, overcoming the performance, security, and integration challenges of connecting customers to the cloud. Thanks to CTERA’s tight integration with Telefonica’s cloud storage infrastructure, and its easy-to-use management console, Telefonica was able to sign-up thousands of paying customers within a short period of time, and continues to see adoption of these services grow month after month.
