Coming to Grips with Unified Edge and Cloud Scale

Last week we announced the availability of the CTERA Edge X Series, the industry’s first hyperconverged cloud gateway combining out of the box, edge computing and multi-cloud data management. But what does a hyperconverged cloud gateway really mean and why should you care?

Hyperconverged Infrastructure (HCI)

Hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) initially started in the datacenter, combining compute, storage, and networking into a single solution to reduce the complexity and cost of managing separate components. According to Gartner, as much as 20 percent of business-critical applications currently deployed on three-tier IT infrastructure will transition to hyperconverged infrastructure by 2020.

In recent years, hyperconverged solution providers have extended their focus to also address challenges at the edge of the enterprise network, consolidating branch IT footprint to the minimum and migrating as much as possible to cloud. This shift required the introduction of smaller HCI configurations with remote management capabilities.

The focus of hyperconverged was traditionally around applications and their related structured data with basic file capabilities. However, edge locations are also where 80 percent of enterprise unstructured data is created. And that calls for a different type of solution, that enables much more productive and cost-effective data management at scale.

And that is where CTERA comes in.

CTERA Edge and HCI

CTERA provides the leading enterprise edge solution for unstructured data management with secure multi-cloud tiering. By marrying CTERA Edge with HCI technology, you get the ultimate unified edge solution, providing the most value with the least mount of overhead for enterprise IT.

The new CTERA Edge X Series we announced last week is the first such solution in the market. The dual-node system combines integrated virtual compute and high-performance flash storage, with PB-scale global namespace using smart cloud caching. You can see below what Mark Peters from ESG Research has to say about it:

If your organization is struggling with branch IT modernization, if you are looking at edge HCI solutions, but unclear on how to address growing storage capacities, or if you want to connect your edge locations to cloud, but are concerned about security and performance – CTERA can help!
