Initial Setup (On First Access) > Initial Gateway Setup
Initial Gateway Setup
Before setting up the gateway, you have to configure the portal to which the gateway will connect, as described in Configuring a CTERA Portal as a Precondition to Setting Up the Gateway. After configuring the portal and installing the gateway, you need to perform an initial gateway setup. On first access to the gateway, you set up a gateway administrator and then a wizard guides you through connecting to a portal and storage and user setup. You can skip any of the wizard steps and perform them later, as described in Gateway Administration.
After this initial gateway setup, the file server structure is synced from the portal to the gateway.
To access the gateway and initial setup:
1 Open any web browser.
2 Enter the gateway's IP address to navigate to the device.
When you connect to the web interface for the first time, your browser displays the Welcome to CTERA page:
3 Choose a user name and password for the administrator. The password must be at least eight characters and must include at least a letter, digit and special character, such as ~, @, #, $ , %, ^, & , (.
4 Optionally, enter an email for receiving notifications regarding the gateway.
5 Click Save.
The Name this Gateway window is displayed.
6 Either keep the gateway default name, or enter a new name to identify the gateway and click Next.
If the gateway does not have a disk, the following message window is displayed.
Otherwise, the administration user interface is displayed to set up the gateway, starting with the Account Details window.
Note: A message is displayed when using a virtual gateway. You can ignore this message.
7 Enter the DNS name of the CTERA Portal to which you have an account and want to connect the gateway to, in the Portal Address field and click Next.
The Sign in window is displayed.
8 Enter the username and password to access the portal and click Next.
When using a virtual gateway, the Select License window is displayed.
The available storage is displayed.
Select the license for the gateway and click Next.
The Select Gateway Mode window is displayed.
Note: The CACHING option is not supported on C200 gateways.
9 Select the primary mode you want to configure for the gateway. This can be changed later. The modes are:
CACHING – Provides users with access to all their home folders and shared folders on the portal. The main storage is on the portal in the cloud with stubs saved locally. A stub is a file with a tiny footprint that contains the metadata about the file, such as the file name, size, and modification date. Only the folder and file metadata and not the actual file content is saved locally.
SYNC – Provides users with LAN speed access to a subset of their home folders and shared folders on the portal. SYNC mode is similar to CACHING mode, but all the selected content is downloaded from the portal to the gateway requiring more local storage.
CLOUD BACKUP – Provides secure periodic point-in-time backups of the gateway. In addition, the gateway is configured in Classic mode, such that folders belonging to a user connected to the portal are synced with the folder on the portal.
10 Click Next.
The Easy Storage Setup window is displayed.
Note: The window display is slightly different for a C200, C400, C800 or C800+. For example, with a virtual gateway, the maximum storage allowed for the gateway license is also displayed.
11 Click Next.
If the setup wizard determines that certain storage configuration changes would be beneficial, the Proposed Actions window is displayed describing the recommended changes.
If CACHING mode was selected, the disks are formatted as XFS, otherwise they are configured as NEXT3.
When SYNC mode was selected, the Select Folders for Sync window is displayed.
Drill-down the cloud drive and select the folders that you want synced to the gateway and click Next.
The Wizard Completed window is displayed.
12 Click Finish.
The CONFIGURATION tab's Main > Home page is displayed.
13 Select Main > Dashboard and verify that all the hard disk drives installed in the gateway are available.
If you connected to a portal and selected CACHING, the file structure from the portal is synced with the gateway so that the gateway has the same file structure.
You can rerun the wizard by selecting Main > Home and click Setup Wizard.
